Diversity is having a seat at the table.

Inclusion is having a voice.

Belonging is having that voice heard!

ADVOCACY

Our Self-Advocacy Council is led by and made up of adults who deal with the day to day issues that all people in the I/DD community face.

Their life experiences are powerful and valuable! They are leading the way in advocating for affordable housing, community living, and ending institutionalization.

We believe in the principle that those with lived experiences should lead the way! Our members are working to remove barriers for citizens with I/DD so they can live and fully participate in the community.  These self-advocates are stepping into leadership roles to create their own paths and helping their peers to do the same.

It's time to hear their voices!

AHFG advocates for the rights and needs of adults with developmental disabilities, raising awareness and promoting policies that address affordable housing, inequalities in community-based services, and lack of funding.

AHFG advocates for individuals who can live independently.

Our team recently met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill in Washington DC to urge Congress to pass The HCBS Access Act (S.762/H.R. 1493) Currently Medicaid mandates only nursing home coverage and does not require funding for individuals who want Home Community Based Services or HCBS which leaves many citizens with I/DD trapped in institutions. The HCBS Access Act would make HCBS coverage mandatory and end the institutional bias for good.

Through collaboration with community partners and steadfast advocacy on the local, state, and federal levels, we are eliminating the barrier of affordable housing to create a society where capable individuals with developmental disabilities can work, live, contribute, and enjoy the success that we all reach for in our lives
